When you enter the world, Ur, 16 little boxes will appear at the bottom of your game window. These are your Inventory. The little boxes are often referred to as a backpack slot or slot.

Each slot can contain one object. Some items stack (fit more than one per slot), some do not. The item information will tell you how many of a particular item will fit in a slot.

Players often fill much of their Inventory with Bags to allow more open slots, as each bag opens a second 'level' of the inventory. Bags contain 10 or 16 more slots (expanding the Inventory capacity to 256 slots).

When items are picked up, they are first placed in the furthest left open slot, or stacked on the furthest left item.

If all of the Inventory slots are full, the object will be placed in the first empty Bag slot to be found starting from the left and working right. If everything is full you will see a message "Your Inventory is full".
