A gem is an item found whilst mining. They are of high value and are often used to gain currants by selling to a vendor, or to gain favor by donating to shrines. The only other purpose is when gems are needed at a street project.
You can increase your chances of finding a gem whilst mining by purchasing a Fancy Pick and learning the Mining skills.
Collecting all five gems grants the Gem Collector achievement and the Gem Collector trophy.
